Materials

terracotta (Redart)
kaoline (#6 tile)
fire clay (Hawthorn Bond)
Potterbot

Methods

Both the spatial and experiential qualities of the design were prioritized over performance optimization.
Although the 3D ceramic printing imposes restrictions on both the geometry and size of each module, this technology provided rapid feedback and prototyping revisions.
Two different base forms (primitives) were tested during the initials trails, printing roughly 25 models before moving on to explore the application of additional textures.
The addition of surface texture improved both the visual and performative aspects of the brick modules.
Three connective joins were explored to test the modules’ ability to stack and create watertight connections. For this analysis, 16 prototypes were created and tested.

 3D Potterbot.

The 3D Potterbot ceramic printer was used to generate the initial prototypes for the Green Wall Cooling System Project. The printer imposes specific limits on both the design variations and the size of each module. For example, the Potterbot ceramic printer limits the designed geometric variations to vertical extrusions with specific slope surface angles. This was a critical angle for all the module designs, since it determined the success or failure of each print.
